“Our Catholic schools are places of growth. Small kindergarten students grow into being teenagers; grade nine students grow into young adults. We all grow both in age and, we hope, wisdom. Growth is natural and expected in the plant and animal world. As Catholics we are expected to grow in faith. What exactly that means will differ from person to person and ultimately, growth in faith is a personal matter between us and God. We can nurture our faith through prayer and knowledge and our living in a vibrant Catholic community. That is how we grow together. Community is part of who we are as Catholics.” commented Glenn Sheculski, NCDSB Director of Education.

Sacred Heart Catholic School in Kirkland Lake has worked diligently over the past two years to decrease bullying incidences by 25%. Based on the student school climate survey from December 2012, we have been very successful! This success is largely due to the 2011 anti-bullying campaign in which we introduced an anti-bullying reporting system, Stop-A-Bully (www.stopabully.ca), to allow parents and students to report bullying anonymously. In 2011, parent and school volunteers also began a youth group to provide our students a safe environment for socializing. But our work at Sacred Heart Catholic School is far from over.

During this season for renewal, I’d like to bring to your attention the contribution of Catholic education in the many communities in which we have Catholic schools. The Northeastern Catholic District School Board serves one of the province’s largest areas geographically, but we take pride in our small community–parish-school partnerships.
Our communities are enhanced by the students who graduate from your local Catholic schools demonstrating the Gospel values that are integrated into every aspect of the curriculum. Ontario’s Catholic schools promote caring communities, the dignity of all persons and social justice. These schools are as well known for their tradition of academic excellence as they are for their primary focus on the care and support of the most vulnerable in our society.

The O’Gorman High School Drama Department announced that next year’s musical production will be Jesus Christ Superstar.
Jesus Christ Superstar is a rock opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber, with lyrics by Tim Rice. The musical started off as a rock opera concept recording before its first staging on Broadway in 1971. The musical is based very loosely on the Gospels' account of the last week of Jesus' life, beginning with the preparation for the arrival of Jesus and his disciples in Jerusalem, and ending with the crucifixion. It highlights political and interpersonal struggles between Judas Iscariot and Jesus, struggles that are not in the Bible. The resurrection is not included. It therefore largely follows the form of a traditional passion play.

The loss of over 20 dairy cattle and two barns at the Haasen Dairy farm a week before Advent got my class thinking about what we have been studying in our HRE4O Social Justice class... charity. The season of Advent is a time of reflection, charity and hope in preparation for the coming of Our Saviour, Jesus Christ. The Haasen family members are a part of our OHS family as they are alumni. They also are a significant part of our community and regional family as they run the largest dairy operation in our area. As we are all interdependent in our families and must at times lean on family members in times of loss, we thought it would be fitting to conduct a fundraiser to help the Haasen family.
