Novel Coronavirus / COVID-19 Update

May 20, 2020

Dear Families, This has been a school year that none of us will soon forget. The Covid-19 Pandemic has challenged us to persevere, to problem solve, and to adjust almost every aspect of our lives. These are difficult times. Thank you for everything that you are doing to ensure the health and safety of yourselves, your families, and our global community.

We have learned that the ordered school closure will remain in effect for the rest of this school year. As a result, all NCDSB schools remain closed and the Learning at Home strategy continues until the end of June. We ask that you continue to expect and encourage your child to be actively engaged in their learning from home. The skills, knowledge, and strategies that they acquire during these unprecedented times will be so valuable to them as they continue their journey in learning.

There is a strong commitment on behalf of our provincial government to return to school after summer holidays. Information about that plan will be shared with school boards by the end of June. In turn, we will communicate the specific details of the NCDSB return to school plan with all of you well in advance of the first day of school.

In closing, we know that your child has personal belongings in the school that you want and need. We are actively working on the development of a protocol that will allow our families the opportunity to retrieve these items. You can expect to hear more about how you will be able to access your child’s belongings in the coming days, from your school principal. Thank you for your patience as we work through these details, while following all of the public health guidelines and expectations.

Please continue to visit our website at www.ncdsb.on.ca for updates and information.

Stay well and continue to take good care of yourselves and each other.

Sincerely,

Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update

The Northeastern Catholic District School Board (NCDSB) in collaboration with the Porcupine Health Unit / Timiskaming Health Unit are taking steps to respond to the COVID-19 virus as it evolves.

To help prevent the spread of all types of respiratory illnesses, including influenza, Public Health recommends:
- a yearly influenza vaccination, available from clinics and pharmacies (for flu only);
- Wash your hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and water or use an alcohol-based sanitizer;
- Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze;
- Avoid touching your face, eyes or mouth;
- If you don’t have a tissue, sneeze or cough into your sleeve or arm; and,
- If you or your family members are ill, stay home.
The Northeastern Catholic District School Board web page contains up-to-date information regarding COVID-19. Parents/guardians should continue to monitor our site as well as the Porcupine Health Unit / Timiskaming Health Unit for regular updates. Key information is provided on these sites to ensure consistent messaging regarding COVID-19.

Board custodial staff has increased its cleaning and sterilization procedures. There has been an increased focus on the cleaning of high touch-point areas with an additional disinfectant spray on completion. In addition, soap dispensers and hand-dryers will be monitored closely to ensure students and staff can practice safe handwashing practices.

As students head into March Break, it is important that the recommendations from health agencies be given appropriate attention to support the ongoing health and well-being of students, staff and families. The Government of Canada issued the following update for travellers this week:

- avoid all cruise ship travel;
- all returning international travellers should self-monitor themselves for COVID-19 symptoms (fever, cough, and difficulty breathing) for 14 days from the date of return to Canada, and should immediately contact their local public health unit if they fall ill or exhibit symptoms during that period;
- all travellers from Hubei Province in China or Iran should self-isolate for 14 days from the time they began their trip back to Canada.

We thank you for your commitment to support the health and well-being of our students and staff and please join all of us at the NCDSB in praying for those who have been impacted by this virus.
